Motorcycles & bicycling in San Francisco

Motorcycles and mopeds are in the minority compared with private cars on San Francisco’s streets. The adventurous visitor can track down a few places where motorcycles and mopeds are available for rent. These tend to be close to beaches and university campuses. Helmets, a valid US or international motorcycle license, security deposit, and prior riding experience are required.

BICYCLING

Bicycling is very popular in San Francisco, and it is possible to find routes that avoid hills, especially along the waterfront. Bicycles can be rented for around $25 a day or $130 a week. There are bicycle lanes in parts of the city and the Bay Area, and some buses are equipped to carry bikes strapped to the outside.

There are two marked scenic bicycle routes. One goes from Golden Gate Park south to Lake Merced; the other starts at the southern end of Golden Gate Bridge and crosses to Marin County in the north. Bicycles and equipment, repairs, rentals and details of tours are available from Bay City Bike and Blazing Saddles.

OTHER WAYS TO GET AROUND

Pedicabs can be found along The Embarcadero, especially near Fisherman’s Wharf. A fleet of motorized cable cars dashes around the city giving a set guided tour. Passengers can get on or off where they choose. Sight-seeing bus tours can be half- or full-day excursions.

To travel in real style, you can rent a limousine with driver and guide. A water taxi service is planned to run along the waterfront.
